Bird Rescue Information: Exotic tropical birds such as Parrots and Cockatiels, as well as Finches, Doves, Pigeons, and other varieties, are often kept in captivity as beautiful and interesting pets. Unfortunately, many owners may not know how to care for their birds properly, while others experience life changes that may leave their pets without a suitable home. Captive birds can suffer from nutritional deficiencies, psychological stress, and many other problems when they do not receive proper care. Many wild exotic birds are endangered as a result of the international pet trade. Non-profit bird sanctuaries provide homes for some birds for whom their owners can no longer provide care. However, many more of these birds need to be adopted by committed owners who have taken the time to thoroughly understand what it takes to care for the birds. A person who is ready for the responsibility of owning a bird should seriously consider adopting one rather than buying a new one.

Bird Trivia: Parrots mimic humans but do not mimic any other kind of animal in the wild.

Animal ID: Mangolovebird (female)

Pet Bird    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Very High Energy

Hi! Hi! Hi! Hello! Hi again! My name is Mango and man, I just love to go go go!! I am a very active, young, female lovebird and I will actually pace back and forth in my cage until you let me out! I am quite the social 'butterfly'! I am friendly, I like people and I really wanna be where the action is. If *you* are where the action is, I will fly to you and land on your head - several times a day! I should warn you though, I am very scared of hands, although with love and patience I could at least be taught not to bite. If you try to pick me up with your hands now, though, I will bite you. However, this really doesn't seem to be a big ... (Read More)problem as my foster mom picks me up easily with a towel or with a perch. I'll even tell you a little secret about towels....I just love them! I love being under them! I will actually come over to you if you are holding a towel and try to wiggle under it. Watch your hands though, when I do this 'cause if they are in my way, I will bite them. I just love to shred newspaper! I will shred all the newspaper in my cage and then I will go visit everyone's cage around me to see if they have any shreddables too! While I'm in my neighbors' cages, I will also check out their toys to see if their bells ring louder than mine. I just love toys with bells and will play with all that I can get my little beak on. Sometimes, I do try to make friends with the other birds around me but they don't seem to want to be my friend so I look in my mirror instead. I am on a healthy diet of seed, millet, chop veggies and pellets. My foster mom makes us this special treat at night, corn and chop mixed together and warmed up a bit and I just love this!! Yummmyyyyyyyyyyyy My ideal forever home would be one where someone is home all day and I can spend most of the day out of my cage. I would be so unhappy being in a cage all day long. I am so social that it would also be great if you already had some birds my size living with you. I can't be in a home with dogs or cats that might eat me, or small children that might accidently step on me. I would be so much fun to have around! Wouldn't you like to come meet me and see if you can give this little gal a forever home? Hope to see you soon! Love, Mango Interested in adoption? Rescue Me ID: 17-04-30-00196rooster (male)

Pet Bird    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Birds
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant

Hello. We started out getting 4 chickens, and only wanted hens; we discovered we had 3 roosters and only 1 hen. We gave two away and have this one left. He is 2 years old. We thought we may use him to make biddies, however we don't have the time. We have grandchildren that come and we don't want them or any other children to get hurt. We hope he can have more room to roam elsewhere. We allow him out in a fenced area (our 14x16' area) for exercise, but don't allow him in our larger yard because he jumps the fence and we don't want children hurt. Our grandchildren like to chase the hens and we can't allow them to chase the rooster. Thank you.

Animal ID: RockyGoffins Cockatoo (male)

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Hello Future Family! My name is Rocky and I am a Goffins Cockatoo. I know, there are so many different types of cockatoos out there! For those who aren't sure which type I am, I'm the one with the huge cockatoo personality in the small cockatoo body. What a perfect package! Where do I begin?... Well I really am the sweetest Goffins you'll ever meet. I like both men and and women, I'm not picky where my head scratches and almonds come from. I love my foster mom and dad equally but, I play a little more with my foster dad. It will take me a little bit of time to warm up to strangers but once I'm comfortable I will step up. My foster ... (Read More)family has 2 of those 4 legged furry friends living with them and a little 10 yr old mini human and I don't really seem to mind them. Of course the furry guys keep their distance from me and the mini human helps feeds me so there you go, why would I mind them??? Speaking of which, I am a great eater, that's for sure! I don't miss a meal, I love the Zupreem fruit salad, and I really love both cashews and almonds. You know what else I love?.... YOUR FOOD!!! So just please keep an eye on me because I'll eat what's on your plate too and we all know that sometimes humans don't eat bird friendly foods. Heck, I've been watching, sometimes humans don't even eat human friendly food! But, what they do eat sure looks yummmmmyyyy and I'm sure to help myself if you aren't watching! Let me tell you about my missing feathers 'cause I'm pretty sure you looked at my picture and are wondering about them. I had a sinus infection a long time ago and I pulled all my feathers out around my nares and ear holes. Those feathers aren't coming back but that doesn't matter. I'm just as handsome (if not more so) with out them. I really do have such a funny personality and a heart of gold, I'm a real lover. I am so looking forward to meeting you! I'm pretty sure you are going to love meeting me too. Who wouldn't love a feathered clown that likes head scritches and food? What a perfect combination if I do say so myself. I feel, though, that I should add this in. Even though I am a smaller sized cockatoo, I do sometimes still like to use my outside voice which is designed to be heard by other cockatoos up to 5 miles away in the jungle. Sometimes we cockatoos just like to holler with the joy of being alive! This does make us unsuitable for condo or apt living so please live in a single family home if you are interested in coming out to meet me. Oh! I have an Amazon wish list! Maybe you would like to buy me a gift while you're making plans to come out and visit? Here is the link. I would be so grateful, you all out there are THE BEST! http://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/1RVAU7613FRIB/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_v? Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read this. I hope to be meeting you and going home to live with my forever family very very soon! Hugs, Rocky Interested in adoption? Animal ID: MangoMoluccan Cockatoo

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Hello! My name is Mango and I am a Moluccan Cockatoo. My foster Mom calls me a gentle giant. I am a big boy with a big personality. I love to sing and dance and whistle and I like it even better when you sing and dance along with me. I am always asking 'Whatcha doin?' and I say Hi, Hello, Mr Mango, I love you baby, and I will tell you that I am a good boy, I will also tell you I am a bad boy. I love to cuddle and I love head scritches and hugs. I will give you kisses and I love to be out of my cage, although I don't really like to go back in, so you have to be experienced at handling a bird my size. I will step up but only on your hand. I ... (Read More)am afraid of a handheld perch and I am afraid of the broom. So no sticks please! I really like my foster mom but I like my foster dad too. I am good around other people but I get a little noisy if they are not paying attention to me. My foster mom says I am quiet for a cockatoo but I can be loud when I want to be. I can also be a little cage defensive if there are toys placed on the top of my cage. I'm fine when there are only 1 or 2 inside my cage but please don't put any on top, I feel as though I must defend them! If they aren't there at all...problem solved! I am on a healthy diet of Pellets and I prefer the fruit flavored ones. I also like to dunk them in my water before I eat them. I like grapefruit and grapefruit juice. I like apples and grapes and almonds in the shell of course. My foster mom keeps trying to feed me vegetables and so far I only seem to care for yams, butternut squash and spaghetti squash, but she keeps trying to feed me green stuff. I like eggs and oatmeal, rice and as a treat I get organic, whole grain crackers with seeds all over them. My foster parents have another cockatoo and a small dog too. I don't seem to be interested in them and we all seem to get along well, although my foster mom keeps us all a fair distance away from each other and never leaves us unsupervised if one or both of us is out. I would make a great forever companion to a family that has the time to spend with me. Although I am quiet for a cockatoo, your neighbors would still be complaining if you tried to bring me home to an apartment or condo. Please, if you are interested in possibly adopting me, live in a single family home. I sure hope you will come out to meet me soon. While you are making your plans to come out to see me, would you like to send me a gift from my Amazon wish link? I would be so happy and grateful! FPR has the best supporters! Here is the link: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/2K03EEU2XI5R2/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_v? Hope to see you soon! I'll be waiting.... Hugs, Mango Interested in adoption? Animal ID: StitchParrotlet

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Hello stranger! I'm Stitch and my foster mom calls me the most acrobatic parrotlet she's ever met! I love to hang upside down from the top of my cage and turn all my toys into make-shift swings when I jump on them from above! See, I may be 9 years old, but I can live up to 15-20 years so don't call me old just yet. I have more energy than I know what to do with still! Oh? You wanna know about my feathers? Yeah they are a bit rugged from plucking, but I heard the ladies love a rough-and-tough looking man like me! The vet told me I have a good chance of growing most of them back with better nutrition and more distractions from plucking, but I ... (Read More)hope you'll accept me any way I look. It's the inside that matters, not the outside, just like for sunflower seeds...yum.... Speaking of food! I love my seeds, especially my sunflower seeds but my foster mom has been limiting that to treats. Lame! I have been nibbling on some different kinds of pellets but I like to throw most of it to the floor of my cage. I do like corn and if you ask real nicely I will attack your small apple slices. At one point I was more hand tame, but I haven't been out of my cage in years so I don't really like to step up. Maybe with some time and trust, I'll remember again. I am a bit skittish of new people, but I'll definitely still chirp up a storm to greet you! I pick up a tune pretty quickly and have even started to mimic my foster mom's alarm clock! BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! I also love to rock out to music and swing my head back and forth to a good beat, don't think it's only cockatoos who can do that! If you want to see what an awesome guy I am, come over and meet me! I'll keep you entertained if you do the same for me! I have so much energy sometimes I don't know what to do, maybe you could pick out something for me to play with or eat (or both) from my Amazon wish list!? Here is the link: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/19ZEAYF045WA0/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_v? I hope you can come out and meet me soon! Hugs, Stitch Interested in adoption? Animal ID: JojoRed Front Amazon

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Hi hi hi!!! My name is Jojo and I am a Red Front Amazon. Everyone seems to think I'm about 25 years old so who am I to argue?? They also am not sure what my gender is (I know but I'm not telling) so they call me a 'he'. (just wait till I lay an egg and surprise everyone! Just kidding!) One thing right up front you should know if you adopt me is that my beak grows a little off kilter due to the awful all seed diet I was almost my entire life. My beak does need to be trimmed on a regular basis and you should take me to a vet to have that done! Now, I eat mostly pellets and some dried fruit which has slowed my beak growth down considerably. ... (Read More)Be warned though, if I eat any seed or nuts, my beak will get out of hand so I will be depending on you to feed me what is healthy for me, not what I beg you for. We Amazons are 'chow hounds' and will want a bite of anything you are eating! I will try most fruits and veggies and the best way to get me to eat them is for me to see YOU eating them. Everything is always better off your plate, although I still don't have a favorite. Please remember though, human saliva is not good for me so please don't offer me a bite after you've taken one. I sure do love to whistle, especially if there is music on! I can whistle the tune to Andy Griffith (google it if you aren't old enough to remember it!) and I make other little chirps and pleasant noises. I mostly use my indoor voice which means I rarely scream. I like men and women and will go to both. I do get a little frightened of new toys and perches, so please have patience and introduce these things to me outside of my cage and very slowly. This is my first time around those little humans and they are ok, I don't seem to mind them at all. I also don't mind the 4 legged furry things living with me in my foster home right now, I think my foster parents call them doogs (dogs) and boonies (bunnies). Two things I really really love is to hang out with my foster family on the back of the couch and head scritches. Boy oh boy I just love those scritches! My foster mommy says I am an overall great bird! Wouldn't you love to have a bird like me as your forever companion? I would sure like to find my forever home! Why don't you come over and meet me and let's see if we are a match! In the meantime, would you like to buy me a gift from my Amazon wish list? Animal ID: LeoAmazon

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Hello. My name is Leo. I'm extremely shy but I *am* an Amazon, so I can be pretttty vocal if there is something that I want you to know. At the moment, my vocal skills are limited to 'Amazon-ese' but my foster dad still thinks I might have some hidden English language talents. I overheard the nice doctor tell my foster dad that I'm on 'the younger side' (estimated to be under 20) and very healthy. My feathers are beautiful (said modestly) and I'm learning to eat a healthy diet of pellets, fresh chop, fruits and an occassional nutriberry. I really really love almonds though. I could eat those all day! I am really not comfortable stepping up ... (Read More)just yet onto anyone's hand but I can be tranferred from my cage or my playstand on a stick. I do seem to have a preference for men (although I do tolerate women) and my foster daddy has been working with me on my trust issues so one day I will step up onto someone's hand or arm. I am ok with those other 4 footed furry creatures (cats and dogs), but please be sure they keep their distance! I am looking for my forever home! Could it be with you? Would you like to come meet me and find out? Gee, I'd sure like to meet you! I bet I could be a great companion to someone who could be loving and patient and let me go at my own pace. I bet that someone is you! Look at this!I have an Amazon Wish List. Wow.     Large blue and gold mccaw. You must have an outdoor Aviary and flight cage. We have been swamped with requests. After careful consideration we have decided to charge a homing fee of $500. Whereas your homing fee will be refunded to you after 12 months when we visit your facility and make sure you are upholding our agreed-upon care. This is to prevent someone from only receiving the bird to resell it. Please allow at least 3 to 4 days for a response as we will respond to everyone in the order in which you have responded.

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-26-00137Lovebirds (pair)

Pet Bird    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

I will be pulling this posting at the end of this week (04/16/17) if no luck finding an appropriate home. Thus far, we are getting inquiries that clearly are inappropriate homes, including: 1) Can you ship the birds to me? (Obviously, not interested in providing the birds with a stress-free transition.) 2) Quick, I need to get the birds because mine died this morning of old age. 3) Wanting a bird to go outside by their screened pool enclosure, but once they found out the birds have some ruffles around their necks, and one is missing a tail, it was no longer pretty enough and they said they needed a perfect bird - you know, because they ... (Read More)were going to have to actually look at the bird by their pool, and imperfections wouldn't be acceptable. 4) Sending photos of a filthy cage meant for a parrot (what happened to the parrot can be surmised just by looking at the filth). 5) Sending photos of a filthy cage meant for a canary sized bird. 6) Sending a picture of a cage on the floor, next to a dog food bowl (again, a stress-free environment for sure). 7) In many cases, the bird they had owned had died suddenly, but they said they had the bird from a young age, and it was now only a year or two later. Something bad happened to kill the bird - whether filth, stress, smoke. I have corresponded with others who have birds on this site, and unfortunately this is too often the case - people looking for something cheap, and not really aware of proper care and housing. Below is the original posting. Will try for another week, then pull this listing. ***** Two lovebirds, we rescued them from a bad situation about 6 (now 9 months) months ago. They were caged together when we first got them, and we have moved them to a much larger cage, but we think they pluck each others feathers at neck at night, otherwise get along fine, feed and drink together, follow each other around cage. Not yet sexed. They are younger birds, come out of cage pretty easily, curious, but not yet hand tamed. They are sweet. We want these two to go to a forever home, someone who is experienced with lovebirds and understands their behaviors and needs. We do not want to give them to the humane society or like, as then we would not know if they really got into the right situation, or just another bad one. Please email us something about your experience and how you would be housing them. We appreciate the inquiries already received - also, we're trying to find a home near St. Petersburg within 50 miles or so. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Bird in Florida
Birds can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. Exotic tropical birds such as Parrots and Cockatiels, as well as Finches, Doves, Pigeons, and other varieties, are often kept in captivity as beautiful and interesting pets.

Most captive birds are unable to find a permanent home and experience some kind of abuse or neglect in their lifetimes. Parrots can die from exposure to normal household substances such as bleach fumes, perfumes, and anything sprayed from an aerosol can. Exotic birds can live to be over 60 years old.
