Rescue Me ID: 14-11-13-00301Senegal parrot

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Birds
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Rugy, is my 15 Year old Senegal parrot that needs a new home. His name is Rugy and he (not sure of sex) got named that because it was what we thought was the first word he was saying. I got him as a hand raised baby in 1999, he was hatched on July 6. He was weaned to eating seed within two months and I brought him home. He took a liking to me and became a very good pet. I had two other birds at that time a cockatiel and a parakeet. I've learned that Senegal parrots can be jealous and do better as an only bird in a home. I had as many as five birds at one time during his first ten years of his life. He was good with them most of the time ... (Read More)but I always kept a close eye on him when he was out of his cage. Rugy's Aviary Vet. has commented on what a well-trained parrot Rugy is. Rugy is content to stay in his cage when I'm not home but he likes to come out when I am home. I have a floor stand perch for him with papers to catch his droppings. I have a perch in the shower that he loves to sit on when I am showering. He is a great bird and a lot of fun. He likes talking and is always asking 'what are you doing'. When I wash up in the morning he's right there with me talking, laughing or burping, he has learned quite a few words and phrases over the years. He likes to hang out on my shoulder and I can fully pet his body, scratch his head and hold him. Some of the workers at the place that I board him, handle and pet him so I know he can do well with other people besides me. I know he will be a good pet for someone that has experience with small parrots and understands there mannerisms. Please call Bill Miller with question or interest, (518) 428-5817. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Bird in New York
Birds can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. Exotic tropical birds such as Parrots and Cockatiels, as well as Finches, Doves, Pigeons, and other varieties, are often kept in captivity as beautiful and interesting pets. Unfortunately, many owners may not know how to care for their birds properly, while others experience life changes that may leave their pets without a suitable home. Captive birds can suffer from nutritional deficiencies, psychological stress, and many other problems when they do not receive proper care. Many wild exotic birds are endangered as a result of the international pet trade. Non-profit bird sanctuaries provide homes for some birds for whom their owners can no longer provide care. However, many more of these birds need to be adopted by committed owners who have taken the time to thoroughly understand what it takes to care for the birds. A person who is ready for the responsibility of owning a bird should seriously consider adopting one rather than buying a new one.

lnteresting Bird Trivia Low-Cost New York Spay & Neuter Clinics
Parrots mimic humans but do not mimic any other kind of animal in the wild. Most captive birds are unable to find a permanent home and experience some kind of abuse or neglect in their lifetimes. Parrots can die from exposure to normal household substances such as bleach fumes, perfumes, and anything sprayed from an aerosol can.
