Animal ID: Sam0001Blue and Gold Macaw (female)

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Birds
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament

Sam is a female Blue and Gold Macaw. She is very quiet for a macaw, she does say a few words like 'Hi', 'Bye', 'uh oh', 'No', 'what happened' and 'Grandpa'. She does not do the typical macaw scream, never has. She will occasionally call for you if she wants you, wants in her cage, or wants to share your dinner. she is a very sweet girl, she likes her windows, her mirrors, and she likes her cage. She can be very content just listening to classical music watching her world. She is between 42-44 years of age. Sam plucked in her old home, due to stress, but in the past 6 years with us, she has not. She is bald on her chest because of the ... (Read More)plucking she used to do. From previous constant plucking, those feathers will never grow back. She does not like baths, or squirt bottles, I think those were used for punishment in her previous life. She will occasionally bathe with me, but its not her favorite thing to do :) She loves to chew on rope toys, shes not wild about a cage full of toys, just a few works for I said, she is set in her ways. She likes a few fruits/vegetables, but the previous family raised her on seed only, so she loves a good seed mix, peanuts, other nuts, and then what we have gotten her to eat. She loves a good steak also. Sam has a nice sized corner cage, a hanging stand, a floor stand, her dishes and her toys. These all go with her. She doesnt mind being in a room with other birds, she just doesnt want them on her cage, or near her. She also isnt fond of little kids, since they used to torment her in her old life. She is good with a towel for handling by people she isnt comfortable with. It took her some time to bond with me, but once she trusts in you, she is your buddy. I can preen her head, kiss her, shes very gentle. She loves to shred toilet paper. During the winter we put an extra heater in her room for warmth. Sam is not a breeder candidate, and we also want her to go a family we can keep in touch with. She is needing a new home because our living situation had to change. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Bird in North Carolina
Birds can make good pets in North Carolina if they match your IifestyIe. Exotic tropical birds such as Parrots and Cockatiels, as well as Finches, Doves, Pigeons, and other varieties, are often kept in captivity as beautiful and interesting pets. Unfortunately, many owners may not know how to care for their birds properly, while others experience life changes that may leave their pets without a suitable home. Captive birds can suffer from nutritional deficiencies, psychological stress, and many other problems when they do not receive proper care. Many wild exotic birds are endangered as a result of the international pet trade. Non-profit bird sanctuaries provide homes for some birds for whom their owners can no longer provide care. However, many more of these birds need to be adopted by committed owners who have taken the time to thoroughly understand what it takes to care for the birds. A person who is ready for the responsibility of owning a bird should seriously consider adopting one rather than buying a new one.

lnteresting Bird Trivia Low-Cost North Carolina Spay & Neuter Clinics
Parrots mimic humans but do not mimic any other kind of animal in the wild. Most captive birds are unable to find a permanent home and experience some kind of abuse or neglect in their lifetimes. Parrots can die from exposure to normal household substances such as bleach fumes, perfumes, and anything sprayed from an aerosol can. Exotic birds can live to be over 60 years old.
