Rescue Me ID: 15-09-30-00364Sun Conure (male)

Pet Bird    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Birds
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Hurley is a 6 year old Sun Conure who likes daily attention and interaction. He can go a couple of days in his cage while I work 12 hours, without being handled or let out of his cage, but he prefers not to. He is quiet when cage is covered and he loves to dance and imitate singing when you do it with him. He trusts other animals, like my 50 lb. dog and bothers her often. He is energetic and likes to keep busy, chewing on wooden toys, etc.He likes to be pet and scratched on his head and neck. He is fully flighted and does not try to escape, but we are careful. He is very smart and remembers everything that happens to him, like when I first ... (Read More)got him and he escaped by accident through the garage, but I got him back climbing up a tree. He stays away from the door that he got loose from, because he remembers and it had frightened him to get loose. He needs a good home with a single owner, not a family, He like other birds has trouble sharing the attention from person to person. He needs a home because I don't have enough time to give him all the attention he needs and my daughter is moving back in with me with her dogs, and the last time this occurred, her dogs killed another bird that I had, and it was devastating. Animal ID: Sam0001Blue and Gold Macaw (female)

Pet Bird    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Sam is a female Blue and Gold Macaw. She is very quiet for a macaw, she does say a few words like 'Hi', 'Bye', 'uh oh', 'No', 'what happened' and 'Grandpa'. She does not do the typical macaw scream, never has. She will occasionally call for you if she wants you, wants in her cage, or wants to share your dinner. she is a very sweet girl, she likes her windows, her mirrors, and she likes her cage. She can be very content just listening to classical music watching her world. She is between 42-44 years of age. Sam plucked in her old home, due to stress, but in the past 6 years with us, she has not. She likes a few fruits/vegetables, but ... (Read More)the previous family raised her on seed only, so she loves a good seed mix, peanuts, other nuts, and then what we have gotten her to eat. She loves a good steak also. Sam has a nice sized corner cage, a hanging stand, a floor stand, her dishes and her toys. These all go with her. She doesnt mind being in a room with other birds, she just doesnt want them on her cage, or near her. She also isnt fond of little kids, since they used to torment her in her old life. She is good with a towel for handling by people she isnt comfortable with. It took her some time to bond with me, but once she trusts in you, she is your buddy. I can preen her head, kiss her, shes very gentle. She loves to shred toilet paper. During the winter we put an extra heater in her room for warmth. Sam is not a breeder candidate, and we also want her to go a family we can keep in touch with. She is needing a new home because our living situation had to change. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Bird in North Carolina
Birds can make good pets in North Carolina if they match your IifestyIe. Exotic tropical birds such as Parrots and Cockatiels, as well as Finches, Doves, Pigeons, and other varieties, are often kept in captivity as beautiful and interesting pets. Unfortunately, many owners may not know how to care for their birds properly, while others experience life changes that may leave their pets without a suitable home. Captive birds can suffer from nutritional deficiencies, psychological stress, and many other problems when they do not receive proper care. Many wild exotic birds are endangered as a result of the international pet trade. Non-profit bird sanctuaries provide homes for some birds for whom their owners can no longer provide care. However, many more of these birds need to be adopted by committed owners who have taken the time to thoroughly understand what it takes to care for the birds. A person who is ready for the responsibility of owning a bird should seriously consider adopting one rather than buying a new one.

Parrots mimic humans but do not mimic any other kind of animal in the wild. Parrots can die from exposure to normal household substances such as bleach fumes, perfumes, and anything sprayed from an aerosol can. Exotic birds can live to be over 60 years old.
